Optional tour offered separately

Optional tour
Excursion around Mandalay by trishaw [HD-pm]
2 persons = USD 13 per person
3 persons = USD 14 per person
4 persons = USD 10 per person
Take a trishaw ride at the North-East corner of Mandalay Palace and start your excursion by trishaw. The last capital of royal Burma, Mandalay is still one of the largest cities in Myanmar, and a cultural and spiritual centre. This afternoon's tour includes some of the city's most interesting temples and palaces. Begin at Shwenandaw Kyaung, or the Golden Teak Monastery. Built entirely of golden teak, this intricately carved wooden monastery was once part of the Mandalay Palace, used as private apartments by King Mindon and his chief queen. Visit Atumashi Kyaung and continue to Kuthodaw Paya, known also as the world's biggest book. Around the central stupa are miniature pavilions, each housing a slab of marble. Numbering altogether 729, these slabs are inscribed with the entire Tripitkata, or Buddhist scriptures. Proceed to Kyauktawgyi Paya, famous for its monumental seated Buddha, carved from a single block of marble. Stop your excursion at Mandalay Hill to enjoy the sunset with panoramic views over the palace, the city, the Irrawaddy River and the vast surrounding plain. Transfer by vehicle to the hotel.

Optional tour
Excursion to Mingun with boat trip
2 persons = USD 29 per person
3 persons = USD 24 per person
4 persons = USD 19 per person
Travel upriver by boat to Mingun, enjoying the views of river life - fishing villages, market boats, women attending to their washing, and children playing in the water. Explore the ruins of the vast Mingun Paya, a monument to human ambition - never finished, its size would have dwarfed all contemporary pagodas. See the Hsinbyume Paya, a pagoda dating from 1816, first built by King Bagyidaw and dedicated to the memory of his wife, the Hsinbyume Princess. Like many other pagodas, this structure is a symbolic representation of the mythical Mountain Meru. Visit the Mingun Bell - in 1808 Bodawpaya had a gigantic bell cast to go with the gigantic chedi. Weighing 90 tons, it is claimed to be the largest bell in the world. After that, return downstream by boat to Mandalay.

Dazzling Mandalay – Temples, Markets, Food and Comedy
Combine the sights and smells of local markets with an evening of slapstick comedy performed by the comedic but controversial Moustache Brothers. The tour starts with a visit to several Mandalay markets to soak up the atmosphere and interact with the locals. Make your way to the Ayerawaddy River just in time to see the local fish market coming to life. Watch the trishaws, motorcycles and small trucks laden with rattan baskets full of silver fish push their way through the crowds to the market. Customers haggle for the best prices and best catch from the slippery piles of fresh catfish, grouper, snakehead fish and many other varieties found in the river. A visit to the colourful and fragrant flower market reveals a myriad of exquisite exotic flowers used as offerings for the pagodas and shrines. The next stop is at the vegetable market to see the locally grown produce, along with a visit to a nearby monastery to hear the entrancing sounds of monks chanting evening prayers. After sunset, head to a local restaurant and beer garden to relax over a glass of chilled Mandalay beer and a delicious Bbq dinner. The evening's entertainment is provided by the Moustache Brothers, three Burmese men who perform old-style vaudeville consisting of humour and satire mixed with Burmese dance. The slapstick trio became famous in the 1990s when their jokes and rants against the Myanmar government brought them a string of prison sentences involving hard labour.

Mount Popa Views and Burmese Tea Party (5 hours)
Join a Burmese tea party and visit an extinct temple-topped volcano dedicated to the legendary 'nat' spirits. During the journey from Bagan, stop in the small village of Shwe Hlaing for a Burmese-style tea party hosted by a local family in their home. Try some famous tea leaf salad accompanied by a cup of Burmese tea as you chat and get to know your friendly hosts. Take a stroll around the village and watch the locals demonstrate how they climb the palm trees and how they use the sap to make palm sugar and fiery liquor. Continue to Mount Popa, an extinct sheer-sided volcano that rises out of the plain. Topped by golden stupas, it is a famous pilgrimage site for locals who come to worship at the Nat temples. Along the way enjoy the array of flora and fauna, including many species of birds and butterflies. Lunch is taken at the Popa Mountain Resort, perched midway to the summit of this legendary mountain. Relax for a while taking in the breathtaking views across the plains, valleys and distant mountains, before starting the return journey to Bagan.

Sightseeing in Bagan
Bagan is a spectacular plain stretching away from the Ayeyarwaddy River, dotted with thousands of 800-year old temple ruins. Although human habitation at Bagan dates back almost to the beginning of the Christian era, Bagan only entered its golden period with the conquest of Thaton in 1057 Ad.

Visit Shwezigon Pagoda (Shwezigon Pagoda is still renovation until further notice but can be visited as usual) (30 minutes)
The Shwezigon Pagoda's graceful bell shape became a prototype for virtually all later stupas all-over Myanmar, and the pagoda originally marked the northern end of the city of Bagan.

Visit Gubyaukgyi Temple at Wetkyi-Inn (30 minutes)
This temple was built in the early 13th century and repaired in 1468. The vivid colourful paintings and the impressive architecture make this temple an interesting site for a visit. This temple is not to be confused with the Gubyaukgyi Temple in Myinkaba. The temples primary point of interest is most certainly the fine and detailed frescoes depicting scenes from the jatakas, Buddha's numerous past lives. Please note that ascending the platform of the pagoda is not allowed.

Visit Ananda Pahto (30 minutes)
Ananda Pahto is one of the finest, largest, best preserved and most revered of the Bagan temples. Thought to have been built around 1105 by King Kyanzittha, this perfectly proportioned temple heralds the stylistic end of the Early Bagan period and the beginning of the Middle period.

Sunset cruise on the Irrawaddy river (5 kms)
Take pleasure in cruising on the river with a private boat. Witness the golden sun setting beyond the mountains and the silvery moon rising casting reflections over the water on the horizon while the remarkable views of pagodas, temples and evening life take the breath away. With cool breezes at one's back, look up to the clear skies and locate constellations and even the passing shooting star. Being the calm waters of the Irrawaddy River at night instils in one the reconfirmation that this world is indeed wondrous and beautiful.
